Intel Core Ultra 200S Announced

Introduction

Intel announced its reimagined lineup of desktop processors Core Ultra 200S, set to release on October 24th, 2025. Intel is ditching the ‘i’ moniker that we all grew to know and love, to the ‘Ultra” naming convention. Core i9 will now be Core Ultra 9. Furthermore, Intel is moving away from the 5-digit naming as well; the what-could’ve-been Core i9 15900K, is now the Core Ultra 9 285K. All this change signifies Intel’s shift from their traditional monolithic 14th Gen to a chiplet-based architecture.

Today we will go over the announcement of Intel’s newest generation of desktop processors and over the specifications of the 5 newly released Intel Core Ultra 200S Processors

Intel Core Ultra 200S Architectural Changes

Intel has made the shift towards utilizing a chiplet based design for their processors! It has been almost 7 years since AMD made their shift from the monolithic to chiplet in their AMD EPYC 7002 Rome processors which translated Ryzen 2000 using Zen 2 cores. Intel is now making that same shift from their monolithic Raptor Lake 14th gen series to a chiplet based Arrow Lake desktop processor. (Sidenote: Intel went chiplet for Meteor Lake but that was confined to just mobile processors).

By utilizing a chiplet-based architecture, Intel can design a CPU’s components with higher fidelity and maintain flexibility for various configurations.

Intel Core Ultra 200S chiplets include:

  • GPU Tile using Intel ARC
  • I/O Tile which includes X PCIe lanes
  • Compute Tile that houses the P-cores and E-cores
  • SOC Tile which ties everything together

With that being said Intel Core Ultra 200S has a lot of promising improvements over the last generation:

  • Reduced power draw and better performance per watt
    • this reduced package temperatures
  • 15% improvement in multi-threaded performance
  • 9% IPC uplift for P-cores & 32% IPC uplift for E-cores
  • New Xe-LPG powered by Intel ARC for improved integrated GPU performance
  • New NPU for accelerating AI tasks, matrix calculations, and convolution algorithms

All Intel Core Ultra 200S Processors are on a new socket LA 1851 and supports:

  • Dual Channel DDR5 6400 MT/s
  • Memory overclocking support
  • Individual P-core and E-core overclocking
  • 2nd Gen NPU cores (neural processing units)
  • Up to 20 PCIe 5.0 Lanes and 4 lanes PCIe 4.0 (depending on motherboard)

Intel Core Ultra 200S Key Takeaways

This is Intel's first desktop chiplet based processor. Respectfully, the first generation of anything will need the kinks ironed out. But knowing Intel, their launches tend to be quite smooth. The performance numbers in real-world applications might not fly off the charts, but Intel's architecture overhaul to reduce power draw and increase efficiency is a step forward in the right direction.

Intel's presentation of the Core Ultra 200S highlights its performance per watt and reduction in power draw. They claim similar (or better) performance than the last generation at half the wattage during light productivity workloads. And for gaming, expect a reduction of over 100W in total system power and an average 13°C reduction with Intel Core Ultra 200S during gaming workloads!

We are excited to see some competition with comparable performance and comparable power draw. While the last generation 14th gen Core Series processors, namely the 14900K were the performance king, it only achieved it by drawing the most power. If Intel's Core Ultra 9 285K displays that same, if not better, performance at lower TDP, we could see some interesting parity between the two largest desktop CPU manufacturers.
