NVIDIA at CES2024

As expected, NVIDIA announced and introduced three new GPUs to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40-series lineup with the NVIDIA RTX 4080 SUPER, RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, and RTX 4070 SUPER to supplement their already powerful GPUs. While the GeForce RTX 40-series GPUs are gaming oriented, NVIDIA decided to throw some period correct AI jargon along with the launch.

There has been a large uptick in the demand for home PCs with AI training and deployment capabilities, with startups and enthusiasts testing out various deep learning models and designing bespoke machine learning algorithms.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER, RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, and RTX 4070 SUPER have an MSRP of $999, $799, and $599, respectively, and will be available to purchase in January. Let's take a look at the specs compared to their non-super counterpart.

NVIDA saw the demand for their RTX 4090 do extremely well for those willing to shell out the pretty penny, but for the RTX 4080, shoppers were reluctant, only buying the RTX 4080 because it was available. The talk on the internet clamored about the high pricing and it looks like NVIDIA is shifting their lineup’s pricing. The NVIDIA RTX 4080 SUPER now has a lower MSRP at $999, which directly competes with AMD’s RX 7900XTX. The RTX 4080 SUPER boasts more CUDA cores, higher clock speeds, more RT and Tensor Cores, all at the same TDP. Additional Tensor Cores and marketing from NVIDIA showcase the potential for the NVIDIA RTX 4080 Super to be used in AI workloads, like DLSS3 frame generation, AI image generation, and AI video generation.

The RTX 4080 Super will be available as a Founder’s Edition Model and from 3rd party add-in board providers like ASUS, GIGABYTE, PNY, and more.

The NVIDIA RTX 4070 Ti SUPER also looks like a healthy bump in performance with additional CUDA Cores, more VRAM, larger memory bus and bandwidth, as well as a slight increase in clock speeds. Also coupled with more RT and Tensor Cores, it should make productivity and AI workloads just a tad bit faster. The larger 16GB VRAM and bus bandwidth are the stars of this upgrade, all at the same price as the NVIDIA RTX 4070 Ti. Expect the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER to be the card to pick up, especially since its upgrade to using AD103 GPU die makes it more like a NVIDIA RTX 4080. The RTX 4070 Ti already is a crowd favorite with its efficiency and performance capabilities, and the SUPER version is only going to make it better.

The RTX 4070 Ti SUPER will be available only from 3rd party add-in board providers like ASUS, GIGABYTE, PNY, and more.

For the entry level enthusiast looking for a capable GPU for gaming, the NVIDIA RTX 4070 boasts excellent performance per watt while keeping the VRAM capacity above the cursed 8GB of VRAM on older generation and lower tier cards. With increased CUDA Core count, RT cores and Tensor Cores, gaming with ray tracing and DLSS3 will only be a smoother experience and executing parallelized workloads like rendering graphics also will be increased. The $50 price bump is a small price to pay for a little more longevity and performance. If you can stretch the budget, the RTX 4070 SUPER is a great choice for entry- to mid-level gaming performance on high resolution.

Final Thoughts on NVIDIA RTX 40-Series SUPER

We wished there were a NVIDIA RTX 4090 SUPER but realistically the RTX 4090 has no competitors in the GPU space in terms of performance, and we speculate that’s the reason for NVIDIA counting it out on this mid-cycle refresh. However, it is refreshing to see the upgrades to these GPUs with little to no increase in price.

The RTX 4080 was in no competition against the AMD RX 7900XTX but with the price drop and performance gains in the RTX 4080 SUPER, NVIDIA is shaking things up. Coupled with the lack of stock on the AMD RX 7900XTX, the RTX 4080 SUPER might be the choice of upgrade for those that were looking for a GPU under a grand and haven’t pulled the trigger on anything.

If you’re looking to get a GPU, SabrePC tries to stock as much computer components as possible. The NVIDIA RTX 40-series SUPER GPUs are set to release by the end of this month, January 2024, so check back on our website to see if we have them up for grabs.
