Introduction

For decades AMD has pioneered technology to push the limits of what our desktop computers can accomplish. With a previous strong focus on gaming and efficiency, AMD is delivering its newest addition to the AM5 platform with the AMD Ryzen 9000 Series processors powered by the newly released Zen 5 architecture, the world’s most advanced and powerful option for enthusiasts. Official release date Aug. 15, 2024.

The Highly Efficient Zen 5

In the days when AMD wasn’t in the spotlight for best raw CPU performance compared to team Blue, their main focus was to deliver impressive performance-per-watt leadership. Zen 5, built on cutting-edge 4nm manufacturing technology, is extremely performant – and the most efficient – core architecture. Improvements include improved branch prediction accuracy and latency, wider pipelines and vectors for higher throughput, and deeper window size across design for more parallelism.

Zen 5’s single-threaded instructions per clock are increased by about 16% over last-gen Zen 4. Enough about the architecture; let’s look at what AMD Ryzen 9000 series processors have to offer.

AMD Ryzen 9000 Specs

Here are the specifications for the 4 new AMD Ryzen 9000 Series processors set to release on August 15th, 2024: Ryzen 9 9950X, Ryzen 9 9900X, Ryzen 7 9700X, and Ryzen 5 9600X.

AMD Ryzen 7 9700X and the Ryzen 5 9600X have already hit review samples and to borrow their conclusions, their numbers are commendable. Look at the TDP; 65W is very energy efficient and likely won’t produce absurd amounts of heat. But that lower power limit was a contention for most reviews, noting that these chips could’ve gotten better performance numbers if the stock power draw was higher.

Who is the AMD Ryzen 9000 For?

You’ve likely scoured review sites like Techpowerup, Phoronix, and a whole host of content creators that benchmarked this chip. Here are our conclusions:

Zen 5 is a generational improvement in productivity and per-core performance in workloads that utilize all cores like rendering, video editing, simulation, etc. But for multi-core performance, especially in workloads that can’t use all cores, like in gaming, the numbers can be a little lackluster.

Since Zen 5’s architectural changes targeted mostly productivity workloads. Enthusiasts focused on power draw will rejoice in the low 65W TDP performance efficiency in the Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X. Those who do encoding, decoding, and all core workloads look at the Ryzen 9 9950X as the performance king.

For those strictly interested in gaming and getting the most FPS, last-generation Ryzen 7000X3D chips are still the leaders. But a different story can be had when the highly sought-after X3D variants of the AMD Ryzen 9000 series chips inevitably launch. Stay tuned. When deciding on what AMD processor you should buy for your next system here are some scenarios and recommendations:

  1. I prioritize the most FPS!
    1. Choose last generation AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D for its gaming leadership and value.
  2. I prioritize performance in productivity in all-core workloads!
    1. Choose this generation AMD Ryzen 9 9950X for its productivity leadership.
  3. I prioritize performance in productivity but can't occupy 24 cores...
    1. Choose this generation AMD Ryzen 9 9900X or the AMD Ryzen 7 9700X and turn on PBO.
  4. I want a balance of gaming and productivity!
    1. Choose this generation AMD Ryzen 9 9950X or AMD Ryzen 9 9900X.
  5. I prioritize overall performance-per-watt for a low-power machine!
    1. Choose this generation AMD Ryzen 7 9700X or AMD Ryzen 5 9600X for its exceptional performance at 65W TDP.
