| The introduction of the Sandy Bridge Xeon E5-2600/1600 series also ushers in the new Romley platform. Romley differs from the previous generation 5500/5600 series platform (Tylersburg) in that it integrates the ICH and IOH /MCH into the C600 Platform Controller Hub (PCH), eliminating the need for a discrete host bus adaptor when connecting to I/O devices such as SAS and SATA (Up to 8 ports 6Gb/s SAS, RAID 5 optional). Other changes include the addition of a second Quick Path Interconnect (QPI) increasing frequency from up to 6.4GT/s to 8.0GT/s, an upgrade from 18 DDR3 1333 (288GB) to 24 DDR3 1600 (768GB) DIMMS per 2-socket platform (8 memory channels), and an increase from 36 lanes of PCIe 2.0 to 80 lanes of PCIe 3.0 (40 lanes per socket). |
